Armadillo Christmas Bazaar - Austin, Texas

The History

Since 1976, holiday season shoppers in Austin, Texas have flocked to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar to find all manner of locally-made arts and crafts. In a city experiencing as much growth as Austin has in the 2010s, that makes the bazaar an “Austin institution.” In fact, the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar is inextricably linked to a former “Austin institution,” the Armadillo World Headquarters (AWHQ), a concert venue that held sway in Austin from 1970 to 1980.

According to legend, the bazaar’s heritage dates to 1975, when musician Lucinda Williams was at the Armadillo World Headquarters in conversation with AWHQ’s Bruce Willenzik. Williams mentioned that a “starving artist” friend wasn’t selling much near the University of Texas campus at an open-air market along a section of Guadalupe Street known as “The Drag.” Her comment, to the effect of “Too bad the artists down on The Drag don’t have a warm, dry place like this to sell their art for Christmas,” provided the impetus to launch the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar the next year.

Music

For music fans, it’s a terrific opportunity to catch musicians in a well-lighted venue during reasonable hours, and many of the artists have their own merchandise available for sale.

Extras
There’s no bad time to catch Ray Wylie Hubbard playing his grungy mix of blues, country and rock, but the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar is the best time to catch him outside of a smoky honky-tonk, so don’t miss it.
